The Heart Behind Looney Ranch
Looney Ranch was originally created as a safe haven, a place where rescue animals could find a forever home filled with love, care, and peace. Our journey began in Arizona, where we spent time on a property in Golden Valley. During those days, we fell in love with the wild burros who would gracefully wander through the land, becoming a familiar and heartwarming presence.
One day, without warning, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) set up a round pen on a neighbor’s property, with permission, and trapped the neighborhood burros. We watched helplessly as the burros we had grown to love were loaded into a semi-truck and taken away, never to be seen again. We were told they’d be taken to a facility in Utah, but the uncertainty of their fate left us heartbroken and determined to make a difference.
That experience led us to discover All Seated In a Barn, a California-based rescue that saves donkeys and horses from the auction pipeline. We were shocked to learn that many donkeys, if not rescued, are shipped across the border to Mexico for slaughter. Their skins and other body parts are then exported to China for use in traditional medicine. It was at this rescue that we adopted our first four donkeys, each with a heartbreaking story of their own. Since then, our donkey family has grown to five, and each one is a cherished soul who now knows what love feels like.

In addition to our donkeys, we share the ranch with seven spirited goats, none of whom are rescues, but all came from loving homes. We also care for a miniature pot-bellied pig and a sulcata tortoise, both of whom were surrendered by their previous owners and now live peacefully here.
Looney Ranch has become more than just a sanctuary, it’s a place where animals and humans alike can heal, connect, and rediscover joy.
With Liz’s lifelong love for animals, yoga, and sound healing, she began to see a deeper connection: both humans and animals often carry wounds, sometimes feeling abandoned, unseen, or unwanted. She believed that combining self-care practices like yoga and sound therapy with the calming presence of animals could create a unique and transformative experience for others.
Today, Looney Ranch Wellness is not only a sanctuary for rescued animals but also a nurturing space for humans seeking peace, connection, and healing. It’s a place where broken spirits, whether on two legs or four, can come to rest, be seen, and start anew.
